The Prince and Princess of Asturias visit the Institute24/01/2013
On Thursday 24, January the Prince and Princess of Asturias visited the facilities of the Instituto Oftalmológico Fernandez-Vega on the occasion of the commemoration of the 125th anniversary of the ophthalmologic practice by the Fernandez-Vega family.
The Prince and Princess arrived at the Institute after two pm with Mr Javier Fernández, president of the Principality of Asturias; Mr Pedro Sanjurjo, president of the General Assembly of the Principality; Mr Gabino de Lorenzo, Government Delegate of the Principality; Mr Agustín Iglesias, Mayor of Oviedo; Ms Mª Jesús Fraile, Sub-secretary of Health; Mr Faustino Blanco, Health Counsellor of the Principality and Mr Jaime Alfonsín, head of the Secretariat of H.R.M. the Prince of Asturias.
After taking pictures with the staff at the centre, Their Majesties visited the three phases of the entity, paying special attention to the research area, task carried out daily at the Eye Research Foundation - Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica (FIO). Professors Luis Fernández-Vega and Carlos Belmonte explained to the Prince and Princess the lines of research carried out at the Foundation, while visiting three of its labs, Eye Surface, Genetics of Glaucoma and Neurobiology of the Retina.
It is precisely the research area, the one most recently established, the most peculiar, both due to its growing importance and because its carried out by a private entity, constituting a national and international reference.
After visiting the Foundation, Their Majesties the Prince and Princess signed the Book of Honour of the Institute.
And finally, before lunch, they received the Medal of the Institute from Professor Luis Fernández-Vega.
The Prince and Princess concluded their visit early in the afternoon.
